Troubleshooting Problems in Your Car's Sound System

If you have been noticing problems with the sound system of your car, there is no need to head off to the car stereo shop to buy a new sound system or hire someone else to repair it; you can solve the problem yourself by learning these few troubleshooting tips.

First, check the wire connections to the amplifier that powers your car's system. Reconnect any loose wires that you find with a pair of wire strippers, at the same time removing half an inch of the insulation and tightening the wires. Next, increase the volume on the head unit and listen for any humming sound; this can signify an exploded speaker cone. If you should find one, it is best to replace it with a new speaker cone, although you can opt for a temporary fix with a piece of electrical tape placed over the hole in the cone material.

Check if the current correctly flows through your system's wires by disconnecting both ends of the wires and connecting them to a power meter. If you do not get a volt reading and you have checked that the wires are connected properly, then this can mean that you have a break somewhere in the speaker wire. The best solution for a sound system problem like this would be to replace the old wires with new ones and attach it to the speaker rather than attempt to do a splice. Just a few household tools and these helpful tips can help you diagnose your car sound system's problems and fix them yourself.
